CARIBBEAN ACADEMY OF RECORDING ARTS AND SCIENCES FOUNDED

President and founder Joseph A. Johnson founded the Caribbean Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) and Caribbean Music Hall of Fame with the vision and goals of to develop Caribbean Music into the mainstream and solidify Caribbean Music Genres.  CARAS’s mission is also to provide services to musicians /artists throughout the region and the world with an Annual Caribbean Music Conference and a signature event like the Grammy Awards for all Caribbean Music genres.  CARAS aims to also establish chapters on each continent and facilitate a global outreach and education program for the development of Caribbean arts and culture worldwide.  CARAS founder, Johnson outlined in a proposal the need for CARAS.  (Available via PDF)
Johnson created CARAS after he was told that National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) would not create categories for Caribbean music genres for the Grammy Awards.  Johnson realized that founding CARAS was crucial to the development of Caribbean music in the mainstream.  CARAS is an inclusive organization with a goal to work with all established entities that focus on Caribbean arts and culture.
“It’s not motivation for any artist when their music or cultural heritage is not recognized as a legitimate art form, especially by those who control mainstream media”.  CARAS founder Johnson noticed that SOCA and other Caribbean music genres are not categorized on music websites like MySpace and others selling or promoting music.  “The folks that produce the Grammy Awards acknowledged that they cannot handle the incorporation all the genres so they created the Latin Grammys”.  CARAS is created to facilitate the Caribbean Grammy void and will recognize all that were and are part of the foundation of Caribbean Music genres.  CARAS will work with all to set professional standards for the Caribbean Music Industry.
CARA’s plans include Caribbean music Genres identification and solidification through the establishment of a research and archiving network to study the social impact of the Caribbean music genre globally.  CARAS will collaborate with governments and organizations to develop a vault and data base to preserve historical works and the creation a Caribbean Music Hall of Fame.

CARAS is recruiting founding board members that will contribute to the growth and development of CARAS’s mission.  Membership will include governmental, organizational, individuals, and public.  CARAS can be reached by logging on to http://www.CARASINC.com or email jjohnson@caribbeanculture.com

Who is Joseph A. Johnson?

Joseph A. Johnson holds a BA in Mass /Business and Organizational Communications from Emerson College Boston and former Executive Producer/Host of Boston’s first commercial Caribbean music Radio program on 1090AM WILD.  Johnson hosted the program for 24 years and is a native of Trinidad and Tobago.  Currently he is the president and founder of CARAS Inc. Caribbean Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, Triple J. Communications and webmaster for WWW.Caribbeanculture.com, www.dancehallsource.com, www.socasource.com  and www.djjamminjoe.com
Triple J. Communications is a multi-media state of the arts production/promotions/public relations and consultant agency that provide professional services to non-profit, government, corporate, education, individuals, groups and institutes.
Johnson has worked with most major Caribbean artists on his radio program “The Caribbean Cruise” and has been promoting/producing Caribbean music concerts and functions for over 20 years.   Johnson is a New England Icon for Caribbean music with a goal to help artist and musicians develop their talents in the mainstream.  For most Caribbean people living abroad it’s most satisfying to hear and to know that people outside your country appreciate your culture.  Johnson takes pride in sharing his musical talents as a percussionist and member Tempo international Rhythm Section and DJ.  He sees music as a tool to educate people about his cultural heritage and the region.
“I feel that it’s important that you take pride in your culture and present yourself in a positive manner at all times because you don’t want to give people the wrong impression about your heritage or identity”.  Johnson is a Trinidadian who believes that as the Caribbean region should come together musically to celebrate our diversity and commonalities.  Johnson states that while we are each independent nations separated by borders or water, the links that brings us all together is music, those links were broken by slavery and colonialism. “
The United States of the Caribbean is in the music when we all come together for our festivals and wave our flags in unison to the beats and different rhythms.  All of those beats derive from the heart when we first realize that together with sound we create melodies innately transformed with our emotions.  Those emotions are triggered by the people around us and they can be sadness for loss of life, anger for disrespect, joy for love and respect, and festive for concurring hate.  Johnson created CARAS under the principles of “WORKING WITH” you and “I equals WE” which is most important for any organization to strive or simply exist.   CARAS is a community that has existed in our minds and it is now time to make as real as it can get so that everyone can support it.
